Death Valley | Day 3 American Southwest | Travel Journal

Day 3 of our American Southwest trip takes us to the wonders of Death Valley California, a place of such surrealness that you literally feel like you’re on another planet. We drove from Las Vegas northwest on route 95  and stopped in the small town of Beatty for some all natural bison jerky at an American Indian mom and pop shop. We then made our way through Titus Canyon which had it all – tall, rugged mountains with dirt roads fit for one car at a time with spectacular views of the valley below, deep canyon narrows that you can drive through, and a mining ghost town. It had rained on and off during our road trip, but I believe this really gave the photos below more depth and eeriness that this area portrays in real life. For the most part of this road trip, it was just the two of us, with no cell service, and no one but us on the tops of the guardrail-less mountain tops (not gonna lie, I freaked out just a tiny bit as Ryan and I got a little too excited rapping to our favorite gangster rap songs). As we made our way out of the canyon, about 2 hours later, we were greeted with civilization again and made our way to another part of Death Valley. We trucked to Bad Water Basin, which is the lowest point of the U.S. at 282 feet below sea level. This vast salt flat that you can walk on is pretty neat, as it looks and feels like you’re walking on an iced over pond. We spent just a few minutes here as this is a very popular tourist destination and there really isn’t much more to look at but it is definitely a must see stop if you’re in the Death Valley area. There are many more areas to visit in this park that we didn’t have time to enjoy but will be paying a few more visits in the future to experience this magical place again. A few tips for your Death Valley road trip:

  1. Download some fun road trip tunes (streaming may not work since you may not have cell service in a lot of the areas)
  2. Bring a few layers of clothing and a poncho as it does get windy and rainy at any given moment
  3. Stop by and visit local American Indian shops and support their gifts and crafts
  4. Enjoy the solitude and reconnect with yourself, with the land, and with God
